With Spring Break now in full swing and many of you taking off on a family vacation, we thought we’d share with you some of our go-to snack favorites. If you are looking for a list of ‘healthy’ road snacks, this isn’t the list for you. This is the real deal, the definitive list of sugary and salty snacks you actually want to munch on while you are pounding away those miles behind the wheel, in the air or on the sea.
Rob and Lady Brewmance like to traverse through the state of Arizona and the southwest with a convenience store packed in their rides. Mike likes to load up the wife and kids and search for good spots to see game, cast a reel and take in the fresh air of the great outdoors.
Here we go…
#5) Reese’s Pieces
We can thank E.T. for popularizing this candy in 1982 after E.T. Extraterrestrial first hit the big screen. Thankfully, Reese’s pieces didn’t freak out kids nearly as much as Steven Spielberg’s ‘phone home’ alien did. But, even since then Pieces haven’t been given their due as a trustworthy companion snack as the odometer ticks up. They’ve been overshadowed by their cousin, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. We all know Cups are amazing, but they are hard to eat on the road because you have to unwrap them. We at The Brewmance are all about road safety, so we suggest grabbing the peanut butter candy-coated goodies.
Yes, the yellow, orange and brown candies taste great, but they also check in with 234 calories per bag including 12 grams of fat and 25 grams of sugar. On the positive side, one bag has 6 grams of protein and 10% of your daily magnesium needs (whatever that means). See, there’s good and bad here and the might give you enough of a sugar high to get you to drive home.
# 4) M&Ms
The old, reliable chocolate candy- coated buttons are the perfect snack for a long trip in the car. The hard coated shell and chocolate center has been around since 1941. Back then, the US Army was the largest consumer of M&Ms. The Pentagon loved these new candies because they melt in your mouth, not in your hands. So Uncle Sam felt better about sending troops to the tropics. In fact, they loved M&Ms so much the US military was the only buyer of the product during World War II. See, if it’s good for the US Army, it’s good for America and therefore, perfect for your trip. To sweeten the pot, you can now say ‘Merica while crunching them.
Careful though, each bag of M&Ms has 230 calories. And because of their blend of perfection you can easily consume several bags.
Another fun fact. Wikipedia tells us (so do other sources) the ‘Ms’ are named after Forest Mars, Sr. (founder of Mars) and Bruce Murrie (son of Hershey’s president William Murrie). Hershey’s supplied the chocolate after an agreement which gave them a 20% stake in M&Ms was struck.
# 3) Cheetos
While Rob often grabs the sweet, Lady Brewmance grabs the cheesy goodness of Cheetos. A one-ounce bag
filled with Chester’s favorite will load you up with 150 calories, 10 grams of fat and 13 grams of carbs. In short, a perfect road snack for both their crunchiness and for their nostalgic value.
Grandma Brewmance loved some Cheetos and always had a bag around her house for Lady B when she was a kid.
If you are looking for a little silver lining here Cheetos packs in 2 grams of protein and 2 percent of your daily iron intake. We call that winning here at The Brewmance. Be careful though; Science has proven Cheetos are addictive. One food scientist told the New York Times, ‘this is one of the most marvelously constructed foods on the planet, in terms as far as pure pleasure.’ Amen to that.
#2) Munchies and Sunflower seeds
You might be asking, how can you possibly improve on Cheetos? With a combo bag like Munchies. Munchies are Mike’s go to road trip snack. He starts with the biggest bag of Munchies he can find then finishes with salty sunflower seeds. Munchies are a smart choice for those who can’t commit to just one snack. One bag contains Cheetos, Doritos, Pretzels and Sun Chips. Now, you’re talking about flavor. This bag packs so much yumminess they even covers boring pretzels in flavor.
One small bag of the best of Frito Lay hits you with 260 calories, 2 grams of fat and 510 milligrams of sodium. But, the same bag will also give you 6% of your daily iron intake as well as 4% of your calcium. Boom.
Then, if you do like Mike does, you finish up with sunflower seeds. These are like nature’s hook up. They give you all kinds of healthy fats and fibers. And they are just perfect to munch on while you cruise. Just make sure you have an empty cup with you within reach to spit out the shells.
#1) Sour Patch Kids
These amazing little guys are without a doubt, the best all-time road snack (according to Rob, that is) even if they originate from Canada. They satisfy the sweet tooth by giving you sweet and sour all wrapped into one affordable bag of deliciousness. Even though Rob has been sour on the introduction of the blue fake raspberry flavor, he’s totally willing to eat them in order to get to the other flavors like yellow, red, green and orange.
A 5 ounce bag of these candies, originally called Mars Men, checks in at 150 calories. But, here’s the good news (sorta): Sour Patch Kids are absent of fat. See, that means you only have to do a few extra situps in the morning to make up for munching the whole bag.
In full disclosure, Rob seldom grabs the 5 ounce bag; instead he often opts for the much larger one. He tells himself buying in bulk is a true way to save money. So, maybe Sour Patch Kids can make you smarter too.
